Takeley Local History Society: Review May 2005

The Society has had another successful year and the membership currently stands at over 50. Meetings are held at least 4 times a year and we are grateful to at Takeley Primary School who allow us to hold our meetings in their hall.

In the year since this last Assembly we have had:

22 June 04. Mike Roy, Essex Archaeology Unit - Lower Bamber's Green Roman/Mediaeval Site

24 August 04. Guided tour of Holy Trinity Church by Trevor Allen

12 October 04. Steve and Pat Schorah - Local Postcards

1 February 05. Wally Wright of Bishop's Stortford - Unseen and Unknown

3 May 05. Peter Nottage, Local Thatcher

Our next meeting on 4 October will be Jane Timby from Oxford Archaeology talking about discoveries made during the building of the new A120.

Apart from the speakers our other activities include:

Three new books have been published in the last year;

Telephone Exchange Explosion
Takeley Pubs
Crimes at Mill End

We now have 12 titles for sale and several more in the pipeline. We have sold over 900 booklets so far. The next, due out in a few months, will be a comprehensive history of the old school at Brewers End by Bill Marshall.

On 6 June we presented the bound War Memorial book to the British Legion and this is kept on display at the Church.

Our activities to glean information from records offices as far apart as Lincoln and Newport, and local newspaper archives continue.

Last year we documented about an eighth of the church graveyard and we have just restarted this season and will be there most Saturday mornings.

Our website continues to be enhanced and attracts many emails from all over the world from people interested in Takeley.
